I dare you to move
Open your world
Here is a science fiction movie which takes you to the limits of scientific perfection...infact it takes a look of imperfections in the seemingly perfect scientific world and questions if perfections can be achieved despite lack of in-born and inherent abilities. Should success depend on the perfect-start or ability at all! Atleast the movie suggest that success just depends on desire and the actions which go beyond the standardized capabilities and i agree with that. The will to go beyond the capabilities is the only mark of human progress. Standardization makes this idea difficult to implement and this was the only fault of the system of the society depicted in the society.
The most important scene of the movie is where Vincent finally beats Anton and explains to him how he could achieve this feat by saying "Vincent: You want to know how I did it? This is how I did it, Anton: I never saved anything for the swim back". Vincent represent all those who achieve through struggle rather than swimming within the safety net and relying on their natural abilities. But this act should be done carefully as there are two approaches to achieve it : belief in delusion-based solutions or Realism, and both of them are explained in my other blog post here.
The most surprising act in the movie was the shot when i realized that the doctor knew Vincent's truth but let him go since he wanted to know if he can make it because he too had a so-called "imperfect" son who could make it one day the same way Vincent made it.
It definitely takes an Ethan Hawke to make Gattaca what it stands for. His firm expression power gives the due meaning to the role of Vincent. Side roles of Uma Thurman and Jude Law were also performed excellently to give a firm infrastructure to the main character and his drive towards achieving his goal. Each shot is very clearly crafted and linked to the basic idea which is emphasized time and again (that if you have will, then there is a way and nothing is perfect).
